For the next few months when the young women are in charge of the YM/YW Joint Activities we are going to have as or theme "Survivor-Adulthoood". I have an amazing counselor who has some great ideas and gets us all organized for our activities. We want our youth to learn some skills that will benefit them in the future and have fun in the process.
We decided if we could teach our youth to successfully prepare eggs, they could survive when the need arrises. Eggs are so versatile and fairly inexpensive. So much potential is packed in that little shell. We discussed some of the possible ways that eggs could be prepared and our list filled the chalkboard. After a discussion of kitchen basics and a few tips on cooking it was off to the kitchen where they would each prepare an egg to be judged. We provided them with lots of add ins. Some of our youth were experienced and a few were novices when it came to the kitchen.
I did a demonstration on making an omelet in a bag. Great way to feed a group of people and make sure everyone gets what they like in their omelet. All you need is a quart size freezer bag, two eggs per person and yummy fixins. Take two eggs, crack into bag, squeeze to mix egg, add desired ingredients, remove as much air as possible, seal bag and boil in a large pot of water for 13 minutes. Cleanup is a snap.

This breakfast burrito tied for first place. Not only was it creatively presented, but word was it tasted great. I was supposed to be a taste judge, however the Kita brothers were more than willing to take my place.
The youth were scored on prep, cooking method, presentation, taste, and clean-up. There were both team and individual scores. Two young men tied for first and young women were in second and third. The green team prevailed this week. (Teams were chosen by hiding bandanas under chairs before the youth arrived for mutual.) No contest is complete without prizes.
