Well now we know it is genetic. At Christmas when the family came to Pittsburgh to see us, Matt planned a nice dinner for us on the way home from picking up the last of those to fly in. He had heard and read of this amazing Chinese restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh at Station Square. We thought the ambiance would be nice and a trip downtown would get us all in the holiday spirit and be a nice start to our time together.
Note to self: Stick to what you know or check it out first. The food was mediocre at best, mom's Peking Duck downright disgusting and we paid a small fortune. Next time we'll stick to our neighborhood Chinese restaurant that has never let us down. Pittsburgh was pretty amazing, but it started to snow fairly heavily on our way home, our normal route was under construction so a long day for those who had traveled was even longer.
Matt wanted things to be perfect. It was a nice evening even if it didn't go as planned, we were together.
Flash forward. Month's ago when we started planning our trip to Utah, Elizabeth insisted that we go to this amazing restaurant she had been to. She said the food wasn't that great, it was a bit overpriced, but the ambiance would make us feel if we were at Disney and we could all get our Disney fix.
It made the most sense to go to the Mayan on our way home from Lagoon. So although we were tired we were up to one more adventure for the day.
Elizabeth tried to make reservations but they were booked for the evening. We were told to come in anyway and we wouldn't have more than a fifteen to twenty minute wait. Elizabeth wanted to sit ground level by the diving pool, but nothing was available. We were assured there were no bad seats in the house.
We arrived and were seated within minutes. So far so good. Only problem we were as far from the divers as we could get and we could only see them if we stood.
Just our luck, we had a brand new waiter to serve us. It wouldn't have been quite so bad, but he reminded us repeatedly how new, how bad and how forgetful he was. We placed our order. Eventually he brought out chips and salsa, returned with our drinks and that's when it really got interesting. Long story short, he dumped a large glass of ice water on me and I was drenched from head to toe. Hannah who sat next to me was pretty wet too. He profusely apologized, went to get us towels (which were so tiny they didn't do much good). Our chips and salsa were drenched, Hannah and I were freezing, but we thought, "we'll take one for the team. We'll at least get a free dessert, maybe even a free meal." Nothing, Nada. We had to remind him to bring us new chips and salsa, our food was cold and then he had the audacity to make a comment about leaving a big tip. Although I'm pretty sure he was kidding, he should have kept his mouth shut.
I really wanted to talk to a manager, but then I pictured the wife and baby he may or may not have at home. I didn't want to get him in trouble. He seemed like a nice guy, just not a very good waiter. Believe it or not I gave him a 20% tip.
We need to learn not to have such big expectations. We did however add to our list of memories and laughs.
