We received a nice surprise in the mail yesterday. Hannah received a package from Mrs. Hamilton who was her fourth grade teacher at NH Jones in Ocala. Mrs. Hamilton had sent Hannah a few of her notebooks, her checkbook (which still had $19 available), a class DVD and two awards. Both awards where for media projects that the class had worked on. They were entered in a competition that was for 3rd-5th graders.
The class came in 2nd in the Music category for their Florida video. Better yet the class came in 1st on their documentary video on The Empty Bowls Project. Hannah was one of the videographers. I tried to upload their winning entry, but I couldn't get it to work.
The Empty Bowls Project was started several years ago and has been sponsored at CFCC for a couple of years. People decorate ceramic bowls that are donated and then sold to the public for $10. Our $10 donation included a dinner of soup, bread and water. This years Empty Bowls Project raised $5000 for local food banks. Unfortunately someone must have liked Hannah's bowl because it was sold before we could find it. We bought another bowl instead.
The project helped the children in Hannah's class become more aware of the needs of the community. They learned that there were children in thier own school who were given backpacks of food to take home on Friday or they might not have any food to eat until breakfast at school on Monday.
Thanks Mrs. Hamilton for a great year and making a difference in the lives of those in your classroom!
